CONCLUSION

For Monahan et al. (1994), there was no contradiction between organizational rationality and the kind of individualism that was being developed, for example by training which made sure employees imbibed corporate culture and absorbed its values. There might, however, be reason to worry whether the hopes of sentimental individualism were being disappointed and if, rather than expanding it, organizations were limiting individuality. After all, in return for more rights and duties, organizational culture was now requiring employees to submit their wills to its purposes. Many decades of the development of people management led organizations to make a great many promises to their employees about the degree of individualism that was possible in the workplace. We explore more of those promises in the next chapter.
